Hi there,
I am a trained Beauty Therapist and would therefore like to offer this as a mobile profession in the evenings. I have done this before so I have all the gear but unfortunatly last time it didnt pick up like I hoped and I gave up, well this time im determined as I know it's good money! There is just a slight worry in my head which is about going to strangers houses. I am fine when going to womens houses but last time I got lots of phone calls from 'Heavy Breathing Elderly Men' I dont want to seem the kind that labels people but at the end of the day I'm a 19 year old girl and dont want to find myself in any scary positions
How do I go about avoiding these situations and customers?

Hi Stacie,
Is there anyway you could make up a room at home to be your beauty room? Perhaps a converted garage.....a dining room.
We have changed the dining room into my daughters therapy room for the time being (shes 19 too). It is only a temporary measure as I didnt really feel comfortable her going to clients homes at a young age.
Maybe your parents would be able to consider this...hey its worth asking?
Also I do know of therapists that state they are a Beauty Therapist for Ladies only.
To make it work you need to have a professional leaflet with your prices on (not just something typed up in word), and business cards (search on this site there may be a bargain to be had. My daughter had loads of cards printed for about £5)
How about having a stall at local pamper evenings /fetes / christmas selling evenings (i.e. when the playgroup/local church have one etc) and offer a discount if booked on the day or a mini manicure/head massage etc. Get yourself out there and known as much as possible.
How about donating a service (i.e. manicure) as a raffle prize for a local event. Choose something that doesnt cost you much but is just your time. This way you will be getting yourself out there and known, advertising and the person may come back at a later date too.
Attend wedding fairs with a stall?....you could offer a pamper session for the bride at a set price. Makeup on the day etc Team up with another beauty therapist you may know and have a price for a hen party pamper evening?
If you offer makeup/ nails how about contacting photographers?..this way you may have a photo of your work too. Offer the first 3 free? or something similar.
Look professional...wearing your salon clothes, hair etc whenever you attend an event too.
Would one of your parents consider going along and waiting in the car outside someones house while you have clients?...Just so you can build a client base. I did this a few times and it helped my daughter gain permanent clients that always have her back now.
Good Luck!0 -

Hi there, thanks for that, I have done everything that you have said as I have done it before. I used to work for a photography company doing make overs but here in cornwall there isnt a lot of business for that. I have my own place but its not in a suitable position to convert a room, I used to do this when I was living at home but I couldnt get public liability insurance for some reason - well i could but it cost £3000+ which is silly. Seeings as I could be insured for all the treatments for £90!! I used to take my partner around with me and use the excuse of 'My massage table is heavy so I'm just going to get my partner to set it up 4 me and then he'll be off' that way he could check out the people and then go and sit in the car again. I think i will have to carry on doing it that way I suppose. I have one of those 'Attack Alarms' that when you pull the cord it makes a peircing sound - do you think that wouuld be safe enough?xXx0 -
Can anyone think of a catchy name? For a mobile beauty therapist doing pamper treatments (i dont do waxing mobile as its a lot to carry around is hard to do when your not in own place where you no where everything is) I used to be called 'Serenity' which my sister is law came up with and I do like it but I dont think it is catchy or easy remembered! Can anyone think of something short but sweet? Thanks xxXx0

Stacey - a good website to go for, specifically for this type of stuff is healthypages.co.uk - it has a great forum and people are really helpful.
To avoid the heavy breathing types, don't use massage as a selling point - to be honest, not doing waxing mobile will be a bit of a drawback as it is one of the most popular treatments - although I understand that it takes time to heat up and is a lot to take with you. Something like this product might be useful - ok, the cartridges are a bit more expansive than normal wax, but it would be quicker and easier to carry (and less messy too!)0 -

Hi there,
From experience waxing is not popular around here, I didnt do one waxing treatment whilst being mobile. I do have the GHD wax which is in tubes but like I said with it not being popular around here I don't bother unless someone was to come to me - which isnt likely. Tbh - I don't enjoy waxing either and I wouldnt feel comfortable charging someone when I wasnt putting my all into it. Thats why I'm going down the road of just Pamper Treatments. That way I can advertise for parties, hen nights etc, I just enjoy doing that alot more than waxing etc. Thanks for the website, i'll have a look on there now.
Has anybosy thought of any names?

Hi Stacie I have had the same trouble as you I have been doing it now for around 2 years and I just can't seem to earn enough from it. The pamper evenings at school/coffee morning is a good idea which I have tried but found all the mums to be very clique and got nowhere. I have also put in prizes but even though they have been taken still got no call back. It is so hard to try and make something out of it. Have you joined the beauty guild? you can get your public liability through them and it is really cheap. Also every year they do an aero promotion which I only done really late but I had about 7 bookings from them so hopefully they may come back, only about to start doing them and will definately sign up if they do it again next year. Like you I have spent out on all equipment but I am looking for work doing something else now.0

Hi Stacie, i am in the process of setting myself up as a holistic therapist and would suggest you take a look at the healthy pages forum, especially the business and marketing section where they have loads of fantastic advice esepcially for people like you and me who are setting up as therapists. If you do a search on there there is loads of valuable advice. One being if it is a man state that you do not have appointments for twenty four hours, most men that we don't want usually want the service straight away. Also, asking them questions such as what is specifically wrong with them, as in why are they coming to you for treatment etc, so that you can clarify what service you actually do offer.
Alternatively, state that you only take male clients once they have been recommended by a female client, at least then they have been vetted to a certain extent.
Do check out www.healthypages.co.uk
I have been using it for the past few months and gained great business insight. Best of luck with it all.:j Live on £4500, £2531/£4500:T 101 in 1001 (52/101):j:beer::j
