Please help I think I've just had a baliff at the door

A man saying he was from black horse has just been asking for the missed payment of £147.10 that we owe he wanted cash or cheque or card payment. i couldn't do any so he's left giro slip to take to the bank next week and took sort code and account code to set up the direct debit again. can he do this i feel stupid for not asking for ID please help we've had no letter telling us he was coming at all just 1 saying we had missed the payment and with added charges they wanted £476.05 which is alot more than the missed payment of £147.10

Did he mention that he was a bailiff? If he was from black horse then i don't think he was.
I wouldn't have given him the bank details, but not too sure where you stand with that. How did you pay before? thanks, hubby is going to phone them when he gets home cos they won't talk to me on the phone as its in his name but yet they can talk to me on the doorstep!0

If the account is in your husbands name only and they talked to you about his debt they have broke data protection act and you can reported them for that. I thought they couldn't send the baliffs round until it had been to court?Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

Hi.
From what you have said it is very unlikely this was a bailiff as Black Horse will have had to have obtained a Court Judgement which was either entered by default (in other words you did not return it at all or on time) or you have missed an agreed payment on a CCJ and a warrant of execution has been applied for.
Bailiffs dont usually come round asking for one missed payment on an account anyway, it is more likely a rep from Black Horse or some collections department / agency who have no more powers than the local paper boy.
