Just completed your degree? What's your next step?

Options
Hi all,

thought it would be a good idea for students who have just completed their degree to share their plans to inspire us all.

Whether it be further education, training, non-graduate or graduate jobs it would be great to hear what real graduates are doing rather than reading statistics that 33% of graduates are in degree related jobs or whatever.

I can't start us all off as I have just finished my second year.

Hope to hear all your plans, congratulations and good luck to all who are graduating soon!

Ive just finished a foundation degree in Graphic Design, no grades yet but I know Ive passed.

Ive been offered a job at a football club (Plymouth Argyle) working in their retail department. Ill be the head graphic designer and will be one of the senior marketing guys in the department. Basically Ill come up with ideas on how to promote the retail departments of the club. Also doing some work for the rest of the club.

Really looking forward to it as I love the team :)

Well, just finished my under grad degree in social work. Still have an assignment to re-submit so I won't get my degree classification till around september, but feeling confident I've passed everything else ok and there shouldn't be a hitch!!!

As for plans, those are kind of all over the place at the moment for a few different reasons. So, in the meantime, I'm doing extra hours at the two part time jobs that I've done throughout my degree in order to try and get some extra cash!

The first problem I have with planning is the delay in getting my degree classification. Due to Government legislation, I can't legally call myself a social worker or work as a qualified socail worker until my full registartion with the GSCC goes through. Unfortunately, I can't begin this process until my degree classification comes through. So that delays all of that process, meaning it'll be longer until I can legally work as a qualified social worker. Another problemm is the lousy standards of the GSCC. I've met students who qualified over a year ago and are STILL waiting for their registration and in the meantime, are losing around 5 grand a year in wages...

Second problem is relationship issues. Dunno yet if I move to Cardiff with the other half, or head back to Bristol to be nearer friends and family. So choices need to be made...

Obviously I don't know your circumstance but can you not get a loan to cover your PGCE? If you lived in a university owned hall, a loan would cover the fees and don't you still get £6K to complete a PGCE? But I guess if you have lots of debts, it probably isn't possible.

Congrats to the guys above that have done really well. Just completed my third 3 year, but staying on another year for a masters year half of which I'm doing in America. Looking forward to it all :-)

I graduated last year with a first in computing but seriously questioning if i want to go into the IT industry, spent a year abroad in the hope of inspiration but now i'm back home in the same position.

i started uni late too (now 26) becuase i didnt know what i wanted to do in life so i really neeed to get on a career ladder somewhere, no time or money for further education. currenlty in the process of applying and being rejected by numerous firms for business analyst roles. joy.
What's it going to be, eh?

you'd be surpised how many 20 somethings are just starting uni. I was actually in first year accommodation for my final year due to changing uni's, ended up sharing a flat with 3x 18 year olds so i was 6 years older. they obviously took the pi55 a little but i had a fantastic time. Just meant i could drink more than anyone else.

    certainly nothing to worry about.
