hiya, just wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction.i owe a debt collection company (and a few others actually) money and due to the way my student finance has been paid i reckon it will be more cost effective to get a settlement figure and consider paying it off in one go via that route rather than paying quarterly installments.i had a look at the above thread re tips but i cant get the sample letters to work on the debt website. Was just wondering what the best way to go about getting a settlement figure is? do i write and offer an amount or do i write and ask for a settlement figure?has anyone got links to templates?? sorry im new to all this! many thanks.

You can write to each creditor and ask for a settlement figure, this is typically between 20 - 30% off the outstanding amount. You can ask over the phone, some will be prepared to do this. If you are strongwilled enough offer them an amount, they can only say no. I have one person who we have been working with who did the last one and got up 80% off.
The creditors may want to ask how much money you have got available and where it has come from, but you are not at liberty to tell them.I am a debt counsellor working in the voluntary sector - we don't charge our clients for the work we do!0
