Bad Debt Marks on Credit File Which are not Mine

A family member accidently (i use that loosely) applied for an accout by scoring my name off the pre-printed application and writing theirs in but it came through as my name and they never cancelled the account. At this time i had moved home and was unaware of what was happening (hense why i use "loosely) and the application was for something i would never consider using. They had problems paying for the outstanding items but after 4 months of late payments it finally was cleared (i gave in and gave them the money to clear it last june 07 to avoid any further problems under my name!).
i informed the company but they said they can not do anything despite having proof it is not mine. I can forgive them for what they have done, they never intended to make late payments but they also did not close the account once they realized it was in my name but i got my credit report today and its marked it as bad credit against my name.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way that i can clear this bad credit off my name? i have no other debts under my name and i thought i was doing well until i saw this
Is there a way this might disappear off my record after (x) years:? kinda like an unpaid debt is cleared after 7 years (i think its 7)
I am beginning to panick, it was never a large sum of money owed but there are 4 marks on my report (which i got from annualcreditreport.co.uk) which go from dark red (which is no.5) to light orange (no.2) apparently the lighter the better)
I was hoping to be looking for a mortgage in the next year or so - the debt was cleared a year exactly but wanna know if maybe mortgage lenders would over look this or if there is a way of clearing this somehow, i have contacted the company involved on several occasions and have proof that i was not at that address during the time but they never replied to my letters but i called after the debt was cleared to ensure the account was closed and they said it was but on my report it says the account is normal and has a credit limit.
No matter who i write to, i never get a reply
