Balls to make large abacus

We just need to start with 20 balls that can be drilled to thread onto a pole to help 5 year olds with their counting skills - the cheapest I've seen is Argos 100 play balls for £6.99 - but we don't need that many.
Does anyone have any ideas?

if you want playballs, try the big supermarkets. should get 100 balls for under 3 pounds. still have some spare though...........0
