The package you'll be offered will be mostly based on the company standard, and therefore within budget, so it won't have a lot of room to move - but there's no harm in pushing for a little more, it's a fine line to looking greedy though!0

so the book I bought 10 years ago called "How To Negotiate Your Salary" is just a complete waste of time!
It's full of all these great examples of what you can get in a recession-free world and how employers bend at the first push....

Another thread a while ago appeared inconclusive about whether you should talk money etc when you're trying to talk yourself into a job....now I could be reaping the problem of not having talked through the package at interview stage...
IMO you shouldn't talk about money at the interview stage, unless asked, and even then only if they want a specific answer. Something like "I'm sure you will be able to make a reasonable offer based on my experience/qualifications" will do.
However at the job *offer* stage it's another story, as then they're making an offer for you to start on (some amount) and it's a lot more acceptable to do such negotiations at this point than when you're supposed to be talking about yourself and your desire for the job etc. Your options at this point are to accept, negotiate or decline (or say you'll get back to them and then do one of those three).
Now, I may be wrong here (usual disclaimers apply!) but as far as I'm aware if it's a written offer then they can't withdraw it unless you do something like not turn up for your first day. So that's another reason you can validly do so at that point.0 -

That's pretty much what I thought yet there was a strong view on an earlier thread that the interview was the place to talk about terms. I completely disagreed with that as it's like trying to discuss a price for a product that you don't particularly want to buy yet. As you say, you've enough on your plate with marketing the product against lots of competition without sticking your neck out and talking money when they're not convinced they want you.For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... Well in case anyone wanted to know, the interview on Friday went very well indeed, not sure when I'll find out though.
