Thames Credit again

Hi. I have spent a while looking through here for exactly what I need to do here. I have been receiving letters from Thames Credit chasing me for a debt of over £2000. I have sent a recorded delivery letter to them asking for the account number and name of the lender which they have replied to today. It still does not tell me when the debt was taken out. I have not acknowledged the debt but the letter is asking me to contcat them by phone etc. I dont want to do this as I am sure that I will be recorded and tripped up in some way. What should I do now. I believe this debt may be from over 10 years ago when I went through a seperation/divorce but I am not sure. Suggestions

If the debt is that old then.......

From a previous post of mine (saves typing). ;)
A debt will be "Statute Barred" if there has been no acknowledgement of the debt by you making a payment or in writing within the relevant limitation period.

If you are in England/Wales then the limitation period is 6 years and you should read:

Link: Factsheet | Liability for Debts and the Limitation Act (England/Wales)

If you are in Scotland then the limitation period is 5 years and you should read:

Link: Factsheet | Liability for debts & the Prescription & Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973

If you feel the debt is "Statute Barred", then there is a letter to write at the end of each factsheet.

    Hi, and welcome

First, i suggest getting a copy of your credit report. You can view it free at experian (if you cancel within 30 days) or get a copy from all 3 credit reference agencies for only £2 each which should show you the exact state of any accounts you have had in the last 6 years.

I would not contact them by phone. Once you contact them, they will have your phone number and will constantly be calling you. Also never give personal details out over the phone.

You could request a copy of the CCA and statement of accounts. They aren't supposed to ask for money if they aren't sure you are the debtor, but some DCA's aren't too bothered about this.

There are a few template letters available which you may want to send. Requesting the CCA (customer credit agreement) will require a £1 payment. When writing to a debt collecting agency, it is advised NEVER to send anything with your signature on it.

  • Hi. Thanks for that advice. I have already sent them this letter by recorded delivery and they replied today. The only new information that they sent me was to say who the original debtor was. This letter was asking me to contact them by phone 'The purpose of the conversation would be to ascertain vertain important facts in relation to this matter, which will assist us in complying with your request and/or resolving your query'
Should I ring or what should I do ??
  • Hi. forgot to mention. This debt does not appear on my credit record with either experian or equifax.

    From the insolvency helpline site?

If so, then don't phone them. It sounds like this was a fishing trip they were on and wanted to get your details to try to tie it to the debt. You have notified them that the debt is statute barred and that should be enough.
