Hi all,
Me and my partner are looking to earn a bit of cash on the side by making and decorating cakes for special occasions.
We are both in full time employment at the moment so this would just be a part time thing.
We are planning to set up a website etc but are unclear on where (and if) we need to register the company or what taxes etc we need to pay. I can't see it earning us a great deal but I want to be sure we're doing it all legal and by the book.
Can anyone help?
thanks! xxx

Hi there,
I think that if you just set up as a sole-trader/partnership you do not need to register the business, but you will need to fill in a tax return (your earnings will be as a self-employed person so you need to declare). It's really straightforward, just make sure you keep all receipts and a record of all sales i.e. invoices. I would just give your local tax office a buzz and they will make sure you get the right tax return and give you any advice (they had a free course I went on which taught me how to fill in the tax return and gave me a few tips which were handy).
I would speak with your local Business Link (or look online) as they will be aware of any restrictions/laws there may be concerning making and selling food... They will also be able to advise you if there is any funding out there you could take advantage of (when I set up I got some free printing which was worth it to have some start-up stationery).
Good luck!0
