Car tax changes 2009 savings

Annoyingly, in the new £20 bracket with v low emissions on my LPG converted car, but as it is pre-2001, I still get to pay the lovely 180 odd pound rate. How to incentivise the conversion of older fuel inefficient cars to low emissions fuels. Not.0

At this moment i am simply looking to sell my car or trade it in for a greener car, its unfortunate that i can't find any used cars in the first four bands within my budget. My car has also lost a lot of value with these new bands looming so if the plan was to force people who will strugle with a £90 increase in tax to take a more dramatic loss on their purchase then its working great!0

All of you thinking of cashing your tax in on 28th of Feb and re taxing on the 1st of March, look at
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_172479
They also have had the same idea.
It's not clear, but I think it means you have to cash in the tax, and declare the SORN for at least 21 days, or they won't give you a refund.0 -
My car (Highest tax band) Runs out end of April. So as the new tax bands come in on first April I think it's best if I just dump the last months (March and April) because of this new 3 week off road SORN thing.
Current car tax is £210 changing to £400 next year.
I've had a read here:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680
and I don't see any requirement to take a SORN document with you.
I know you apply for a SORN using this when handing back your tax disc.

Does anyone know if you HAVE to take in a SORN document when re-taxing????
I think losing 2 months tax (roughly £35) on the old taxation scale to save £200 on the next years tax is a wise move.
I still think it's worth SORNing 27th Feb say and re-taxing 1st March (you can apply for new tax disc 2 days before)
I'm still saving but need to be sure that I don't need this SORN form.

Does anyone know about this 21 day SORN decleration yet?
It seems wrong - I thought you just go to the post office with your insurance (and possible MOT) and buy a new road tax disc.
I plan to go to DVLA, get a refund on Fri 27th Feb 09 and then get a new one from post office on Monday 2nd March.
Does anyone know if these road tax increases are now frozen becasuse of the credit crunch - its all become very confusing?!
Thanks0 -

I did last year, when re-taxing my dad's car which had been SORNed previously. I remember, because I hadn't taken it with me and had to go back home and get it!
Mind you, the rules may have changed since then......The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"
