Migraines

  • Been to see the doc who has given me sumatriptan. Shall carry them around with me always (and hope that they work as well as Imigran!).

One question - I have been prescribed tablets which are double the dose of the over the counter Imigran. This is not a mistake as it was pointed out to me by the doc and the pharmacist. I am a little surprised. Is this normal?

    Imigran is sumatriptan.
What dose have you been given? I have the nasal spray which is 20mg per dose.

I've been getting migraines for about 2/3 years now. My doctor prescribed co codomol 30/500mg and this is the only thing that works for me.

  • Well, the over the counter Imigran is 50mg per tablet - the one from the docs is 100mg!! Hooray for free prescriptions in Wales!

Thank goodness I went to see him on Tuesday - migraine came on this afternoon big time, took a tablet - 1 hour later it was gone. :) Can't stop smiling, and still in disbelief that it works, and so quickly. When you've tried most other painkillers under the sun, you become convinced that nothing will work.

Do hope any othe sufferers out there find something that helps for them.

Can I resurrect this thread to ask a question please.

I had a horrendous migraine last week which lasted 3 days so I decided to try imigran after reading about it on the net. £8 ouch!! But it worked. Needed both tablets though as it came back after about 5 hours of taking the first.

Just wondering what is the benefit of getting a prescription for it. Just a few pence saving over the prescription charge? Or do you get more tablets if you get a prescription?

Also, it gave me quite severe weird heartburn like sensations for an hour or so, which I felt was bearable given the relief they gave me. However, just wondering whether a different type of triptan might not do that. Has anybody any knowledge about this perhaps - I think it's a common side effect of imigran.

Well, the over the counter Imigran is 50mg per tablet -

    My DH gets migrains sometimes.

I've bought him Nurophen migrain stuff, but never heard of these triptans you sare all talking about.

Is Imigran the best one over the counter?

I think it's the only one you can get over the counter - and they would only let me buy some in Boots after I'd provided evidence that I'd already been prescribed them (showed them the repeat prescription form I had - I'd left the tablets at home and needed some quickly).

I've also had Maxalt, which I think is a newer tryptan - that worked well for me too but left me feeling more 'hung over' after the attack than Imigran does.

Just a note - when my migraines changed (different things started to trigger them off, and the pain changed in severity) I happened to mention it to my GP suring a consultation for something else) he said that ANY change in migraine symptoms should be reported, as it could be the migraines changing, or something else - and it's better to be safe than sorry.

P.S. In answer to Purplepatch - when I get Imigran from my GP, I get 6 tablets at a time - but I think it's only 2 if you buy them?? Makes sense for me to get them from the doctor, even though I pay for prescriptions!

  • Imigran is £8 for 2 tablets. When I was getting Naramig on perscription I was getting 6 tablets per prescription ( was getting 3 migraines a month at that time)
I've been taking a low dose of Amatriptaline daily at night (this seems to be an anti depressent), and I don't know why, but it works! Can't remember the last migraine I had! Although I do take a box of Imigran on hloliday with me - just in case!

My hubby also used to suffer with horrendous migraine, he also takes amitriptyline at night before bed, and probably only gets an attack once every 2 years....

Yes you do only get 2 in an OTC pack, so obviously a prescription is the way to go then. Thanks for that.
