Ruthbridge Ltd - paid up now regretting?

Hi, im in dire need fo help and suggestions..

To cut the long story short, my father was basically contacted by Ruthbridge to say he had a debt of about £2000, all of which my father was not aware of and remained adamant that he didnt owe anybody anything, the guy at Ruthbridge said it was credit card bills etc and considering my fathers age I assumed he mustve been in debt and I paid up for my father. (the biggest mistake of my life :( )

It has only been since recently ive been researching and realised Ruthbridge have a tendency for hassling people regarding debts they possibly dont even have?? My problem is ive paid up £2000 for something my father was totally against in the first place and was ADAMANT he has no debts whatsoever, now ive lost out on £2000 and im in dire need of money just now so was wondering if there is ANYTHING i can do to claim the money from them??

They sent no paperwork whatsoever to prove my father was in debt nor did I sign anything to say money can get taken out of my account - A standing order mandate was receieved which I got my father to sign and send back (but my signature wasnt required as far as I can remember).

Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated and I do apologise if im in the wrong thread, its my first post so I hope im excused.

Thanking you all in advance xx

Other than asking them for confirmation monies have been paid together with a list of the apparent debts that have been paid off I think you may need to look into getting legal advice.

I take it it is too late to stop the cheque/cancel the DD?

Not too sure what you can do.

I'd ask your father to send a subject access request (SAR) to Ruthbridge which under the Data Protection Act will make them provide all information they hold on him within 40 days for a max £10 fee.

If the documents provided do not convince you that the debt was his, then i would write requesting a refund of minies paid as the debt did not belong to him.

Not sure about what Acts may cover this, but DCA's aren't supposed to request money from people if it is not certain that they are the debtors. So this is a breach of the OFT guidelines.

Might be worth popping over to the consumeractiongroup forum and asking the same question there. There are quite a few posters there fully clued up on the legal aspects of things like this.
