If you ever get chance, do buy from Aldi the Gardenline Moisture Tester and also the pH Tester. These are both brilliant bits of kit. I don't think they are in stock at the moment but do make a mental note to look out for them. Aldi do repeat things like this on an annual basis.

The Moisture Tester is very useful for pushing into your outdoor tubs and hanging baskets, or even the lawn or the flower border, to check whether these things do need watering - and if so, by how much - eg, Do they need a lot of water or just a little? The reading is virtually instant.

Their suntan lotion is great and is £2.99 for a 250ml bottle.
  • I'm not dissing Aldi, but it is really no use going with a shopping list of ingredients as half of them won't be stocked. It is good for what it does. I go there for the bread, the cheese and a few other things that I know they will have. But if you have a recipie for a particular dish you want to make the chances are you are going to have to go somewhere else afterwards. And our Aldi does take credit cards, Midlands.

I go Aldi sometimes to get certain things I know will be lots cheaper than the main supermarkets, but my problem is I go at least another store or 2 max to get the rest of the things I want as long as I know where the cheap things are for the things I can't find there :) My dad's mad for aldi though, he tends to come out with a trolley full for about £35 depending on what he gets and wastes none of it and some of the tins he gets a tray full so he can stock up.

Can anyone else confirm that Aldi are now taking credit cards please? I can't find any info on their website to suggest what payment methods are allowed. The last time I shopped there it was cash only!

It seems to depend on the actual store. Ours definitely doesn't (just cash or debit card).

Two quick comments in passing ...

It's no bad thing to pay in cash - set your budget, take that amount out of the Bank, then go shopping - it makes you think twice about what you're buying - for me paying in cash, rather than just having a card which pays the bill whatever it is - was one of the best budgeting tools I have used.

I used to think that way years ago as well, however, depending on the card you have, it's a better idea to use a credit card as a "charge card" than pay cash in almost all situations where you can use one.

Many cards offer points or rewards based on your purchases, some products get extended guarantees and insurance coverage and as a bonus you don't need to carry around coins or notes :)

    Edit:
Our local Aldi in Scotland (Galashiels) has taken Visa credit cards for the past two years to my knowledge...

I'm somewhat a "fish out of water" over here in Holland where the use of plastic is less common - unless it's a locally sourced "debit" card arrangement that provides none of the aforementioned benefits.
