IN Trouble With The Gym :(

Hi all,
Hope you all had a lovely weekend.
Quick question I'm hoping someone can help me with..
I joined the gym three months ago and haven't used it all. To top things off I now owe them £80, which I cannot afford as I'm self-employed, and business isn't great at all at the moment.
The previous owners of the gym, who I signed the contract with when I first joined up have done a moonlit flit. The gym is now demanding that I pay the arrears (which I really cannot afford).
Do I have a leg to stand on if I say that my contract was signed with the previous owners and not the current ones? Therefore getting out of this contract and the money I owe?
I wouldn#'t do this if I could afford to pay - but times are hard (as we all know!).
Any help, advice really appreciated!
Thanks
HG

What does your contract say?
If you signed up for 12 months then I think it's tough (sorry, that's how the law is).
I don't believe you have a leg to stand on by saying it's different owners (but I am not a lawyer).
When they bought the business they would have bought all the liabilities and contracts, so they are still binding.
First thing to do is to check your contract and see what the minimum tie-in is.
You won't be able to avoid paying for the last few months but you might be able to give notice as soon as possible.
So step 1 - check the contract.
Step 2 - If you can give notice then do so. Either in person and GET A RECEIPT. or via the post and pay 70p for recorded delivery (keep the orange receipt).
If you don't get a receipt then some gyms will just deny they got it.0
