rebuilding credit-tips needed

Hi guys, first post. I have a good raiting but my partners is poor. Mainly down to a 3 year old defualt. Everything has been paid off, and she has had no problems since. Consequntly we can't get a joint account with any overdraft and have had to swallow a 7% intrest only mortgage so we can get a house tougher. The only credit she can get is a contract phone and store account's(Next etc).
We want to be in the situation in two years where we can get a normal hight street mortgage. Is this going to be likely?? I know there is a 6 year limit, but do bad debts in the 5th year get outweighed by any good recient history? Will her being on a joint mortgage help a lot?
Also Even Capital One will not give her a card. This may be just due to not being on the eelctorial Roll(she is now). Anybody know any cards that are not fussy, just in order to get her rating up, not to actually use.
Any tips would be most welcome.
