I had a narrowboat in London and can tell you a little bit about it, but you would need to ask more
One of my neighbours had two lovely kids & they all lived on a neighbouring boat. There are a few downsides. How old are your children? The onus would be on you to educate your children on the dangers of water & obviously to teach them how to swim as well as keep them safe!
Depending on the type of boat & the mooring itself you may have to carry your children on & offboard. If it is snowing or frosty (even when the pontoon has been gritted) I have found it very slippery & difficult to walk on. Boats tend to get quite cold in the winter & boiling in the summer.
There is a fair bit of hard work involved in living on a boat & it is something you should think of very carefully. There is upkeep & maintainence and cleaning & pumping your bilges & keeping the boat well painted, having your bottom blacked, emptying your loos (with some models) engine upkeep, getting firewood etc etc..
It is a lovely way to live and is well worth it in my opinion as long as you have thought about it properly.
Please let me know if you have any specific questions!nothing to see here, move along...0
