Might I suggest that you find out the price in the supermarket and then expect to pay less at the market. It's not just a matter of price, you've got to look at the quality of the meat. Personally I'd rather have a tiny peice of better quality meat than a big lump of poor quality. Talk to the stallholders at the market, I'm sure they'll guide you. If you're used to supermarket meat I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised (on the whole) at the choice, quality, freshness and price that your local market can offer.0

if you're buying pre packed meat in the supermarket it should tell you the price per lb/kg on the pack label.Make a note of it and use it as a guide when you shop at the market, looking for a better price0

Hi owens,
If you have a look on www.mysupermarket.com you'll see current supermarket prices per kilo for different types of meat.
Once you know the supermarket costs then you can go to your local market and decide whether their prices are good value for you. In my experience meat bought from our market can be slightly more expensive but it's locally sourced and very good quality. It really is down to personal choice and depends very much on your local market.

I am luckly enough to live near a local butcher. First time I ever have and I love it!
I went today to get some meat.
I got:
10X sausages
6 bits of unsmoked back bacon
2 chicken breasts (1 of these breasts is equal to about 2 supermarket breasts!)
This cost me about £6-7
The butcher is great and I dont buy any meat from the supermarkets now. He had rump steak in there and they were about the size of a dinner plate!!!!!! God that looked lovelly! and it is lovelly!JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -
Hi there
Well I nearly fainted in Asda today when I saw the price of the "good" cuts. As it's Father's Day tomorrow I thought I'd buy a bit of steak for the 3 of us. Not a chance. The butcher should have had a mask on, the price being charged  . 3 small pieces of sirloin steak and it was coming to over £11. Imagine that!!
Between the apples, strawberries, grapes, bananas, potatoes, carrots and onions I bought coming to over a tenner I don't know how on Earth we're all supposed to eat healthily.
A couple of years ago I went to a car boot sale and the butcher there was selling 10 lb of mince for a tenner and it was wonderful.Grocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0 -

What a rip off. £11 for three bits of steak.
At our butchers I think his best rump steak was about £3.80 a pound (or is it per kg I cant remember!!! :rotfl: ). It is lovelly. I also prefer rump to sirloin anyway.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090
