Tax deductable

Does anybody know whether you can claim for training course fees when competing your tax form?

  • As far as I am aware any costs regarding training are tax free.
Firstly I believe that there is a tax break for employers supplying training but not for individuals who pay for the training courses.

Also depends on the training I believe. If its essential for you to carry out your job yes. If its to further your career then no.

If your employer pays your travel, accomoodation, subsistance to attend training courses, this is also not a taxable benefit.

So, I think your answer is NO! Unless you have been taxed on any subsistance or expenses that you have claimed back from the Company while attending a training course as has happened to me in the past. In that case, you can claim your tax back on that.

    see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/guidance/480.pdf Appendix 9 I think.
  • Sorry If you have recieved this a few times but I find this site a nightmare to DRIVE

    Hi and thanks,

The training was as a Driving Instructor. As you maybe aware you can only teach people to drive for payment after having qualified as an ADI.Therefore costs are incurred to allow me to earn money. Hence my question. I do accept however that although I was trained via a school at a cost of some £2000, I realise that I could have taught myself although it would be very difficult. I would have still incurred the costs of the various tests involved , 3 in total. The strange thing is I can claim for my licence £200 as I cannot again, teach without it.

    Thanks again for the advice.
