bbq gas bottles??

I have a bbq 3 burner type with warming plate at side,i have still to use it and still to buy a gas bottle for it,but i cant make up my mind what size of bottle would be best,i have the choice of a 5kg or a 13kg the 13kg being more expensive to refill each time,i just wondered does these bbq use up a lot of gas or can they last ages as been thinking of going for a 5 kg bottle,as one its nice size and i think maybe 5/6 times during the summer it will be used if that.
I am not sure if the 13kg would be just one that maybe would lie around too long etc.
I know how long is a piece of string but how many uses can you get out of the 5kg bottle,or time frame.
As would not want to go get a 5kg one and have to fill it often,i have heard a 5kg one would last ages is this correct,i know i am asking too much here but i cant decide on what size bottle would be recommended.
I do have to buy the bottle and also get it filled, both 5kg bottle and 13kg one is both same price but to refill its good difference.
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

I would suggest, you could try local freecycle or friday ad to pick up a bottle cheaper than what the refilling company would charge you
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

I have the larger bottle but it is very heavy.
The wheeled BBQ only takes seconds to get out of the garage, but then its the struggle with that  bottle.
If I had thought it thru, would have gone for the 5 KG

We had a 5Kg that lasted so long the shop said it was obsolete when we tried to get it changed!!!!

Mind you, with our weather we didn't get to use it that often!

Seriously, though, the weight is a major issue with the bigger ones.

Can anyone help? Do you need briquettes with gas barbecues and if you do what kind should you buy and does anyone know of a reasonable (cheap :-) place to buy them?
I went to my local refuse dump and got an empty 5kg calor patio/bbq gas bottle for £5 (no receipt given, if you now what I mean). I hope this info helps someone.
  • You dont in reality need flavour briquettes with gas bbq if you dont want to buy them. However I do actually buy the penroc lava rock briquettes just incase it does make a difference to the flavour. I just got them from Tesco last time.

If you find your 5kg cylinder is too small you can always change it for free to the larger size next time you go to fill it up at the local gas supplier. I use 13kg bottles on my main bbg but as its left outside all year its not an issue with having to move it. I find I use it more if its out and ready to go to cook breakfasts at weekends or to grill that chicken breast we need for the dinner.

Hi all, perhaps it is stating the obvious but when thinking of the size of bottle just ,i bought the manhatten 2 burner gas bbq which has the cupboard for the bottle to sit underneath tucked out of the way,(so there is no carrying the bottle from the garage to the bbq)or so i thought,i bought the 13 kg bottle and bbq got it all home and put it together only to find the large bottle does not fit in the cupboard, this was not mentioned by the homebase staff who just want to sell you something and get rid of you.they did succeed but i returned the next day with my reciept and a printout of the Argos price and got my price promise of a tenner off the barbie, hey hoe cook it slow ha ha

Have you seen the BP Gas Lite Bottles?

They come in 5kg and 10kg sizes, are half the weight of steel bottles and semi transparant so you can see how much gas is left.

I've got a 10kg bottle and highly recommend them.

  • Get one free at your local dump, there is a cage for them at the side - I did on Tuesday!
