DF Ways to keep kids occupied

Volunteered to take my 3 nephews out camping for a few nights in the lakes and I've realised I don't have a clue how to keep them occupied. They're aged about 8, 8 and 6 (I think). Need suggestions!!!

Despaired a little bit at the fact non of them seem to do anything that require any sort of exertion, effort or imagination. It's all Xbox Xbox Xbox. (when I were a lad it was all hoops and sticks :) )

So I thought I'd show them a bit of outdoor stuff and wrench them away from the tv. I've suddenly realised that apart from a couple of things on my mental 'to do' list, I've not really got much imagination myself.

We'll take bats and balls and stuff for the campsite, I'll get them walking a little bit to make sure they sleep at night. Intend to get them into buoyancy aids and take them out on a little motor boat on Windermere (cos they'll love that). There's a load of wild geese / swans / ducks at Ambleside which we can feed...

And thats where my inspiration ends.

I'm hoping I'll get deluged by ideas here. I'm looking to score some brownie points with them and secure my place as the favourite / cool uncle.

Please help? What the hell have I let myself in for?!?!?!

Sure fire way to entertain nephews (speaking as a cub & scout helper) involves fires and knives in an organised way. :D

If you are in a place where open fires are allowed they can collect the fuel, light and enjoy. (get a scouting book out of the library if you need advice) If you can heat some beans or make some tea you'll have them thinking they're pioneers :rotfl:

Nature trails and building camps keep my two entertained.

  • What about building a den or something? (I am assuming you are going to a woody area by the way!) they can collect all the stuff and build it themselves. Would definitely pass a bit of time!

outdoor treasure hunt? Ie finding things you would expect to find in area - leaves of a tree, sticks, flowers, landmarks etc? Organise a treat for them when finished? marshmallows on campfire?

Could also take a map and get tehm to help plan somewhere to go using map?
