DO NOT under any circumstances put water in the actual slow cooker. All ingredients go into the pot which then sits in the slow cooker. I mean, you wouldn't pour water over your electric hob when cooking a stew would you :D Tell your mum that. The slow cooker is just a heating appliance and probably not waterproof. If you look inside the slow-cooker itself, it should say not to put water in. I haven't got a cookworks one, but all my other ones do.

I have the cookworks slow cooker and you DEFINATLY DO NOT put water in the actual cooker unit. Only in the crock pot itself.
