Dinner service, cheap or Denby?

Options
I have a cupboard full of differant plates etc, but I would like them to match.

Do I buy Denby so I can replace broken ones? or buy 2 x a cheap set?

Have a family so need something hardwaring plus dishwasher safe, any ideas?

I have Denby and it goes in the dish washer.

It was expensive to start with I know. I have had mine over 12 years. I've only broken about 5 pieces and have been able to replace them easily, and with them doing kitchen ware as well I've been able to add to the set over the years.
I'm sure they used to do boxed starter sets. These were cheaper than buying each piece individually.

If you can get to Denby they have a great shop and resturant there. You can have a guided factory tour.

Something can be expencive at the time you buy it but it becomes value for money the longer it lasts and the more you use it.

    Hope this helps.

I got a full dinner/tea set of Denby 22 yrs ago and its still going strong. Its been in use every day and like Rikki I've broken about 3-4 pieces over the years but easily replaced them. It even survives being bashed against the taps, (my downfall!). The shape/style and pattern don't seem to have dated either...I still love it and have no regrets about the initial outlay which seemed horrendous at the time!!! icon7.gif

Churchill have a range of dark green and dark blue china that looks like Denby.

It's heavy like Denby and could easily be mistaken for theirs. Might be worthwhile for you to buy that if it matches your sets.

We bought one of these kitsa couple of years ago from Costco, ours had 4 of everything and cost £102 compared with about £160 in the high street.

Then the collecting starts, c ouple of extra plates, the serving dish looks nice, that casserole is expensive but lets treat ourselves....

Very good quality though, and seems indestructible (touches wood!).

Another advantage is the ranges seem to stay current for years so replacements will readily available for a long time. If you register on the website they will give you 12 months warning if your design is to be discontinued giving you plenty of time to complete your set or buy a few spares.

Finally there can be slight colour variations between batches so you may want to take one of your plates to be sure they match, especially if buying seconds from the factory.

Our local co-op department store.. CWS. often has Churchill china. I have seen it in Poundstretchers too. It's a well known brand.

Email Churchill and ask which shops stock their china. I don't have the details.

    Hope this helps. Maisie

There was another thread last week in the In My Home section, where a poster was complaining that her new Denby dinner service was fragile. I've had my for about 20 years and it's fine, but I'm not sure about the new stuff.

My everyday set is Jamie Oliver Royal Worcester, which I bought from the factory shop. It's brilliant, and being white goes with everything. Just a thought .........

Our wedding present consisted of bits of denby (all seconds cant help it still require to moneysave even then), well from very close to the factory so when visit parents go in and get a few more bits.
If you look on the denby website they tell you where the factory shops are and whats on special offer which if you can get it in bits makes it even cheaper.
Believe debenhams had a starter set (in white) reduced in their current sale.
Really like the denby as you can almost mix and match some sets with each other and they are quite timeless (my parents have theire from their wedding 33 yrs.. i think.. ago and even with 3 hellions as kids all bar two peices have survived.)
