I had a phonecall today looking for one of my neighbours. They asked me to tell her to call Mo on this number.
The man on the phone got really agressive when I said that I didn't want to tell the person to ring the number as I'd heard about debt collectors using these techniques.
TBH I don't even know this person but I will advise them to come on here and have a read about statute barred debts etc.

When I get these calls about neighbours, I tell the caller there is a £100 fee for providing information (such as 'do they still live at...') or passing on messages and that the £100 fee must be received by me before I will do what they ask.

I do love their indignant responses to this. Either that or they just hang up! :D

They're doing it for money, so why shouldn't I?

    Good for you Kaz.

Hopefully she won't be too put out that a neighbour has been amde aware that she is possibly in debt. Hopefully we can assist if she's having any problems.

I would suggest puting a * in place of one of those numbers though - don't want you done for harrassment or anything like that.

  • tbh a phone call can not be used to acknowledge a debt unless it is backed up with a letter referencing the conversation. On the otherhand the dca can bully people in to paying these debts. As long as this person makes no payments or acknowledges the debt then they should be ok if the debt is over 6 years old and there have been no court judgements in that time.

I wrote out a note to them saying I'd been asked to get them to ring this number and advising them not to. I gave them the web adress for this site and told them to call by this forum and have a look.
Took the note down to their house and they weren't in so I left it in their letter box. Hopefully they do come here and have a look (if they aren't already members) and maybe some good will come of it.
