What a joy!
This is long, sorry.
My student loan has been on yearly deferrment since 1998.
In 2005 The Student Loans Company failed to process my deferment application which was sent to them in March (thankfully I keep copies of everything I send).
The first I knew was a demand for payment from HSL.
Phoned them and then SLC to find out the deferment had been "lost".
Re-sent the original info and SLC took til August to process it!!
HSL have chased me hell for leather to try and get full repayment of the loan despite deferment being granted every year.
They went quiet for a bit but now I'm getting hassle from Wescot to pay the whole lot of £4527.74.
Sooooooooooooooo (if you're not asleep yet) my question is... do I dig my heels in and refuse because I've kept my end of the bargain, and have been granted deferments I am entitled to, and let them take me to court or do I pay them a token amount a month to make them go away?

The Student Loan Company/HMRC depts are really a mess! I have staff who've paid for 18 months through their tax code/PAYE and not a penny has been removed from the amount owing at the SLC. When we challenge them they shrug and say, OK we'll put a note on the file but we're about 12 months behind at the moment

I'd say dig your heels in, if you have the energy
But it is still a debt, and life is so much nicer without it, so if you can afford it, pay them something - BUT NOT A PENNY IN CHARGES:D0
