Non-stick pan unsafe?

Hi,
I recently purchased a Teflon non-stick pan and I noticed today it has scratches that show the metal at the bottom of the pan......I recently watched saw something on telly saying non-stick pans can cause cancer. Is it time for me to discard my pan? I never used metal untensils etc in the pan so, cannot figure out why this has happened so soon. Advice from personal experience or otherwise will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't like the idea of feeding my family teflon so don't have any non stick pans. I used to though and I'm sure I consumed a fair bit of teflon and have survived. If you've only recently bought it and used it carefully, I'd ask for my money back. Then decide how strongly you feel about teflon - it's widely used and lots of people love it because it makes washing up easier. I'd rather not use it.0

I wouldn't worry too much, you will be dead before you read this post:D
Seriously though, as the proud owner of many a battle-scarred non stick pan, and having spent a childhood knocking back sherbet-dib-dabs and FAB lollies (all far more toxic than Teflon LOL). I don't think you have too much to worry about.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -

Woulnd't touch non-stick withe a barge pole. There has to be something in recent times causing all this cancer and I vote for Teflon and plastic food packaging/wrapping

OK, so me and mine are doomed! But I love my huge non-stick saute pan and use it several times a week. I used to go through the Teflon Red-Spot ones in about 9 months, but my mum bought me a VERY expensive one last year and it's still going strong.
I checked my plastic spatula/fish slice and found the edge had got very rough, so I now only use wooden spoons in my non-stick pan. I'm also convinced that freshly ground black pepper is really abrasive - and I use loads!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
Teflon fumes can kill birds.
Please do not use teflon non-stick pans if you have birds. I don't know about other animals, though.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

That's only if you eat them regularly.
