IBM Thinkpad R50E UR0S5UK £399.99 inc VAT ... Opinions Please?

In a nutshell and repeating myself..... Daughter needs Laptop for Uni, (nearly bought today) studying law, so no major demands, will be carrying the laptop about a lot, so a bit of robustness needed..... Which brings us to the IBM Thinkpad R50E UR0S5UK available locally for £399.99 inc VAT c/w Home XP etc.

I know it is the laptop equivalent of Shane McGowan, and it has that nipple thing, but it looks robust, looks like a good spec, it's an IBM (is that good) and at £399.99 it's a good bit cheaper than anywhere I can find online?

Which brings us to..... Opinions on Spec and IBM in general. :)

  • My daughter has my IBM thinkpad (different model) which she has had for 2 year and I had 2 years before that its still going strong though the battery life is a bit shorter now. In general IBM laptops take some beating, because there are so many model changes last years model (but still new) are super value

I prefer the nipple thing - but I'm used to it

Don't forget that if you buy a USB TV adapter and she only watches TV on the battery then she is covered by your home TV licence - she doesn't need a separate one - so that saves £500 over 4 years !
    TANSTAAFL !
  • I have used a variety of IBM laptops - R series, X series and now T series. For my mind they are bullet proof, take a good beating well and seem to last forever. I cant comment on warranty/etc as they have all been machines supplied by work. If I had to buy my own laptop IBM would be the top of my list.

By the way, they have recently sold their pc business to a chinese company - Lenevo. They took on the design and build of all IBM pcs and so far the quality of their machines is as it was under IBM.

Looking at the spec- its not going to set the world on fire. However for working on Office type applications, browsing the net and using it for anything other than playing the latest whizziest games it will do everything you need.

    Good price too!
  • Thanks for the positive comments with regard to IBM. :)

As suggested, she'll need little more than Word, the net, watching the odd DVD and burning MP3's to disk etc.... And no doubt I'll be buying her a digital camera for Xmas.

    Pricewise.... I agree, I couldn't find it sub £490 elsewhere. :)

  • I work for IBM and they are rubbish (in all aspects particularly on trading on reputation). The New Thinkpads are quite good, but hey thats what happens when you sell the "brand" to a massive Chinese Company called Lenovo.

Personally I wouldnt have an IBM computer at all.

    The deal looks ok though!!
  • Where can you get it at that price Rojo?
