Security

I had a phone call from our bank the other day and they asked me some security questions i.e. my name, address etc, and before they could ask me any other questions I asked ‘How can you assure me you are from the bank’, silence for a second, ‘we have your details’ I said ‘my identity could have been stolen and you could be trying to cream more of my identity from me, you could be from a small office in London posing as my bank.’ The lady said she would ask her manager to speak to me,' the whole process of knowing if it is the bank occurred again. I asked her to tell me my mother’s maiden name and she said I could not pass on those details and i asked ‘who is our bank manger at the local branch,’ she could not give those details.
The morel of this is when we ring up banks and we go through safety checks, so why can’t we issue them with a password so we know who they are? Or are we meant to trust banks insurance agents etc
sorry about the !!!!!

I agree with you. All it takes is a statement to get in the wrong hands and they could then phone you and ask you the security questions to get more info about you.

If its that important they can put it in writing.

I had a similar conversation with SKY the other night. They phoned me up and confirmed my name, I was happy to do that.

They then asked for my DOB, I said no as I had no way of verifying who they were.

She then asked for the first and third letters from my password. Again I said no. She was getting a bit flustered by now and asked why. I said I don't give out personal details to cold callers, to which she replied she wasn't making a cold call she was calling from SKY.

I told her that I don't subscribe to SKY. She pointed out that I used to be with them. To which I said so this is a cold call to one of your previous customers.

She said she could confirm the last digits on my SKY card. I said I am still not giving her any personal information.

She then told me she had a great deal for me. I said that's very kind of you, but I am still not giving out any personal information. She gave up at that point.

    :D

I've done this to companies before on a couple of occasions when they've called me, they get quite shirty generally when you start asking them to prove they are actually BT/your bank/the electricity company. It really should be in their training how to cope with it.
  • Thanks for the replies, at least we know how to deal with cold callers

  • Interesting topic of discussion.

I think from now on I will answer these types of calls differently.
I'd rather be playing Squash!
