Being asked to drop Hours

I have already dropped two days a week so I am losing 11 hours a week so over a whole month that is over a week for me as my hours are 35 hours a week. Due to care commitments at home.
Now the company I work for are having problems and we have all been asked to drop hours.
I personally don't think it is fair that I should be asked to drop any more hours as I have already dropped two days a week and only have my wage and my husband benefits coming in.
I did not think about it until after the chat that I should have asked why I am being asked to drop hours when I have already off my own back a few weeks ago.
Am I being fair. From personal point of view I think I have been and can not afford to lose any more time. And it is up to the others drop hours first.
I don't want to leave for various reasons.

So if I get this right, the 2 days you dropped were at your own request so basically you asked if you could go part time as it were? In addition to that, everyone is being asked to reduce their hours? Seems fair to me seeing as it was you who wanted to reduce your hours in the first place.
The other side of the coin is that if you don't, how long do you all have a job for before the company goes under? Also your reduced income, depending on the joint income, would be compensated to some extent by tax credits. Have you updated WTC people? Also if you're caring for someone at home, are they claiming carers allowance?0 -

No I don't think you are being fair.
Did the other staff object when they had to cover your workload because you wanted to go part time (the reasons why are irrelevant)?
Personally I would object if I was a colleague & saw you being treated any differently to me, just because you had already made the personal choice to reduce your hours.
As Conor suggests, make sure you are claiming all that is available for your family & anyone for whom you are caring.
And by the way, you may not have any choice about leaving if the company closes down.0 -
This is a reply that combines both Conor and Floss's question.
I have only just dropped my hours a few weeks ago and when I am not in there is another part timer in so no one has loads extra to do. And a lot of the stuff is left for when I come back in anyway. So hardly think answering a couple of e-mails a day extra is a lot of extra work. When there is very little to do anyway.
I asked my boss who then talked with other members staff. I knew it was not an issue as it is very quiet and it is over kill to have two members of staff on all day anyway and a part timer 2-3 days a week. And I dropped my hours because I had to not because I wanted to. I had no choice as my disabled husband was becoming only what I could call a danger to himself with some of the things he does.
Why would we get tax creditswe have no children, to get tax credits as a couple you need to work 30 hours a week now I will work 24 hours and if I loose another day I will down to 16 hours.
And don't get CA as my husband does not get DLA middle rate care. Even though I think he should. And I work to many hours and earn to much.
Ohh and by law since April of this year carers can by law ask for flexible working hours. It is up the employer to allow it and mine has.
Granted if the company goes under then we have all lost a job.
I can see the other side but think it is a little unfair as it was kinda forced on me to cut my hours and now I am being asked again. And I get no extra help with anything because we have savings. If I was going to get extra help with tax credits etc then I would not mind.

To be honest this would worry me greatly if my boss then asked all staff for a reduction in their hours.
If I were you I would start to look around for another job, as I wouldn't feel particuarly secure in this position, knowing that there are family dependant upon your salary, especially when there are specific needs & rules to get any extra allowances.0 -

I will wait and see what happens. I keep an eye out anyway and apply for jobs when I see them.
But around here it has been slow down and very few admin jobs around.
