Debenhams in the Trafford have some lovely stuff, I just got fixed up for a posh do in November, there are several accessory shops there too like Accessorize, Claires, etc etc hope that helps.

Have you had a look in Primark - they do really fashionable stuff at cheap prices and have some nice shrugs etc.

Look around charity shops? That's what I'd do to start with, although Primark is also great.

Do you have an H&M or Primark near? Both do great hair accessories. I went to Primark yesterday and got a couple of lovely handbags! I saw a really pretty beaded one for about £4, would be perfect for a posh/smart event.

You may come across a nice cardy and skirt at primark and H&M, but its prob worth taking a look in M&S for a smart shrug/cardigan.

Actually, just thought, Primark had some really nice shoes! Very smart and very cheap!

Could you maybe dress up something you already have with a brooch or necklace?

M&S have some lovely scarves that you could wear hanging round your neck to give a top a bit of a lift. They range from £5 - £45, so you have quite a bit of choice!!

and here are some lovely shrugs/boleros from M&S (i might pop out and buy some!!!)

Sorry this post is a bit long!!!! Hope it helps! I know how stressful it can be when your on a budget but need some new bits! Just make sure you get something you will wear again :)

I had to go to a dinner recently for the chamber of commerce. I got a lovely ballgown from ebay (designers at debenhams one for £30), wore shoes Id had ages (from Matalan) and a little bag/purse I'd had free from a magazine. I didn't wear too much jewellery - a bracelet from Evans (£1) and a pair of silver earrings. Less is more, look simple but stylish.
In fact I was a mixture of disappointed and surprised, because the dress code was 'black tie, so I made sure I did it properly, floor length black dress and all that, and there were so many women there who had no idea what to wear to a black tie do, in knee length skirts, bright colours and so forth. Stick to convention and at least you will stand out!

  • thanks everyone,
will have to do some last minute shopiing if i get a chance. Its very difficult though, typical that you cant find anything when you are looking and can when you dont!
