Help! Strange little red bugs in my house!

Please help! I have recently had a invasion of little red bugs in my house - they are really tiny, about half the size of an ant, bright red and have about 4 legs (I think). They are everywhere, I flushed about 12 down the shower tray this morning.
Does anyone know a) what they are, b) where they are coming from and c) how I can get rid of them?
Thanks
Love Di x

Yep, they sound like Red Spider Mites.
We always get loads on our window sills and sometimes inside the window when it gets warm.
I think they are harmless.
The only bad thing about them is if you try to flick them away they get squashed and leave a red mark where they were.
My husband had a couple crawling on his book when he was sat in the garden yesterday.
