  • Thanks for posting this thread people. I just found this charge on my bank statement, even though they promised I would receive no charges for 4 more weeks. thanks to you guys, I know now how to cancel it. Otherwise I would just close my bank account. I was also told that I could cancel at any time.

That's what I did too, just cancelled the DD as soon as they'd set it up. If I don't know exactly what a DD is for (and I didn't at the time) then it gets cancelled.

This is for that gadget helpline isn't it? I think it's quite a good idea really but no way would I pay £7.99 a month for it.

John caudwell used to own them then on 26 September 2006,the Caudwell Group sold for a £1.46 billion.Just before this he sold singlepoint(customer services) to vodafone for £405 million and allegedly they suddenly started to get a huge amount of complaints.
  • to be honest i dont think it was explained all that well
phones4u near where I live has a glass door, so they can see the numpties coming.
  • Hi

I sympathise, I have bought from Phones4U twice and they are shocking with how misleading they are. The last (and final) time I got a contract from them I was offered free insurance for three months and then to cancel if I didn't want to pay for it. Okay I thought, but then 9.99 was debited from my account. I rang the insurance company and was told (very rudely) that Phones4U was supposed to give me the money back retrospectively. I cancelled the insurance there and then and phoned Phones4U, sent about three letters and eventually went into the branch.

In the branch I was told that I should have had the money back, but the saleman hadn't filled in the form correctly so I wasn't getting it back and that basically "ha ha tough". Seriously. I should have written to TS but I was about 8 months pregnant and just too tired to carry on with it.

Anyway would advise anyone never to buy from there! Oh unless of course you're getting a really good deal that's likely to leave them out of pocket, then please do!

I got my last phone from this bunch of crooks and I actually ticked the NO box for the insurance as I didn't want to have to remember to cancel it. Lo and behold when I went through my finances in January I'd been paying this charge for 6 months! I immediately cancelled it but haven't tried to reclaim any of the cash yet as I'm living in Oz until September

I had 3 direct debits put on my bank account after getting a contract phone, when I said to my sister is this normal she said yes, apperently people experienced expect this behaviour and just cancel them.

one was for insurance, I specifically said no insurance when I ordered.
one was for some kind of help service.
the other I had no idea what was for but wasnt with O2 the provider so I cancelled it.

none of them had taken any money out except the help service I was just checking my account for a week or so after I got the phone watching for new direct debits.

Yes, it does seem that P4U add this charge regardless of whether you agree, so yes, it is a con. I distinctly remember refusing the insurance and the way the DD is worded is certainly misleading to the uninitiated. Luckily for me, I check my statements so it came to light quickly.

I thought at first it had happened because the SA was worse than useless and he made me want to punch his lights out at one stage, but reading this it appears to be deliberate.

    Worse than a con then.
