The free version that I have just downloaded has the divx player, the divx convertor and codec in the package, however the convertor is on a 15 day trial. Good spot never the less.

    cheers

  • Just a thought. Try using XVID as it's come from the same code base as DivX but provides much better encoding and playback.

I'm currently encoding all 220-odd of my DVDs onto our network so they can be accessed from anywhere in the house without the need for the disks (Also frees up shelf space) and my experience has shown the XVID provides better output almost every time in comparison to DivX.

Just my two cents worth though.

Worth getting while it's free as some hardware players only do DivX codec playback so handy for that. (Philips players come to mind.)

The quality of the DivX software is excellent and the method for encoding is so very simple it's a dream. Xvid is only now getting good software for encoding like AutoGK which is coming into it's own at the latest Beta release stages.
... and that's all I have to say about that.
  • would someone be kind enough to explain what exactly this programme will let me do?

I received an email with the serial number instantly. If you still haven't got one try submitting a new email address.

You should get the serial number straight away, check your Junk Mail Folders if you have any because mine went straight there.
  • DVDs are stored in a format called MPEG2, both DivX and Xvid are implementations of MPEG-4.

What this means in real terms is that the average movie size is about 6GB. An MPEG4 file is typically in the order of 800MB. This means that your average DVD-+R will store 4 or five movies. If you've got a compatible player it means that each disk will give you more media.

Personally I have a 10" portable DVD player which I bought in America. This also plays XVID and DivX content. So when we're visiting family in England we can put a disk in for my daughter which lets her select which movies she wants to watch rather than constantly switching disks.

Also, we use a chipped XBOX with media player software to allow us to browse our entire DVD collection on our home network without the need to go get movies from the study. This also extends to our music CDs which are stored in MP3 format for similar benefits.

If anyone would like some guides on Xvid encoding please let me know. Xvid encoding tends to be more complicated.

The Divx Software is great for encoding media content but the DVD plugin will cost you more money, even with this great offer.
... and that's all I have to say about that.
