Helping my Mum

Hi.
On Saturday morning my Mum had a real moan about money. She doesn't have any debts, but isn't paid a massive amount and like everyone else is struggling.
Now I know she wont try and find cheaper energy suppliers or anything like that. And the only thing I can think of is for her to stick to her budget and buy cheaper food. Basic rather than branded.
I am off on Friday so we are going to go food shopping together and I will teach her to shop like the student I was. But I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. She was on about getting a second job, but she is already so tried she falls asleep in the arm chair every evening.
I am worried about her and really don't want her to take on any more work. She takes home about £800 a month and rent and council tax is about £400, and she only has about £40 spare once everything has gone and this never actually lasts.
She wont take more money from me as she knows I am in debt, although I have said I will pay her the money from my payrise once I get it. As I don't have the extra now I wont miss it when it comes through and even if it's only £30 a month it will help her.
So any other suggestions? We are also heading to lidi tonight to see how much cheaper we can get the basics there.
Thanks x
(I love my Mum so much and don't want her to be stressed about this so want to help as much as I can)

It may well be worth trying the utilities. Took me about 5 years to persuade my Mum to change and she was pleasantly surprised. She hates cold callers so with the help of this site I was able to get prices and compare things for her and show her how much she could save. Then I organised it all for her. This may be an approach you can take0

Hi Lucy
Sorry to hear about your mum - I think we are all feeling the pinch these days. Please can you list your mum's statement of affairs so that we can see where she can save money.
Lidl is certainly cheaper - I have just done my shopping in there (the dearest item being a pack of 24 loo rolls:eek: ) I managed to spend £27.52:D Here are some the basics that I bought - Farmhouse Loaf (their own) 79p, Egg Tagliatelle 89p, frozen peas £1.31, Charmin loo rolls 24 - £9.49, Honey Roast Ham 49p, cauliflower 69p, kilo of sugar 79p, mild onions pack of 3 large 65p, Cereal red fruits (tastes like special K) £1.69, box of mozarella frozen pizza (2 in box) £1.99, Variety Crisps x 24 £1.79 plus I got a few other treats such as cherry bakewells and coconut minis (like bounty)
I think that on one of the shopping resource boards there are articles about Lidl. It is cheap and the food is good quality.

This is the thing, I don't have her SOA and I also know she wont let me at it!!
But I am going to get her to do a paper shop tonight, we don't need much but will get her to add stuff up as we go round and see what we would spend if we shopped there.Current debt - £16,300
