Temporary contract & Local Government Pension Scheme

I will soon be starting a 6 month contract which offers membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme. I have a choice as to whether or not to opt in, and was wondering whether there is any kind of consensus as to the right choice (although I suspect the answer may be "it depends"). My instinct is to opt out - tiny pension many years hence, better to take the money now - but I wanted to check that this wouldn't be a foolish thing to do ....
Thanks in advance

Opt in ... its a gold plated pension scheme
Remember you get tax relief on the payments and you pay less NI so it doesn't really cost you much
and you dont know that you may stay after the 6 months or rejoin them later.0 -
Join if you possibly can in case you work for them at some point in the future as it is one of the best pension schemes going .(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Thanks very much to you both0
