Reason for leaving - help

I've been in my present job 4 months and to be honest I don't think its for me - I was going to give a year but to be honest I think it would be a mistake to stay there any longer than I have to.

So can anyone give me some ideas as to what reason I can put on an application form without sounding like I flit from one job to the next

I was in a similar situation many years ago. I actually put down that it was temp job and the contract came to an end. As far as I was aware, the company that I then joined didn't contact them for a reference but contacted my employer previous to that.

Difficult one, I took my present job as stop cap and wonder about this, but will simply put this on as reason for leaving when applying for more suitable work closer to home,
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.

Unless you fancy being totally honest and just say it wasn't right for you. Many employers understand this. I interview a lot of people in my present job and if someone is honest and has a valid reason, then I don't mind too much. Many people take on jobs that don't work out. I've done it. I'm more concerned about unexplained gaps on c.v.s more than anything else.

How about 'lack of development opportunities' or 'no opportunity for career progression'. That makes you sound ambitious or interested in learning more.

If they ask you about it at interview, you could expand and say that you had hoped (or understood) the job would give you an opportunity to do X Y Z etc, but sadly that was not the case and so you were looking for a new position that would offer ...... etc.

You could always say that the travel was too much or that you saw the new company as having better career prospects.
Another reason could be that you say you took the 1st job as you wanted to support yourself financially and was prepared to do any job rather than live on benefits.
Or how about saying that you have realised the job was not what it seemed (could say it was less customer focused/front line/challenging) than you thought it would be.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • my sisters cv is about 7 pages long she has multiple different jobs every year because she doesnt likes doing different things to find out whats best for her.

its never caused her any problems she's always been given the job she has applied for

just be honest with the next employer about why you left and unless you're applying for the same job somewhere else it shouldnt really be a problem i think
