Give them a wash in the washing machine or rinse them in the bath or shower

u cant put them in the washing machine lol its bad for the glue that holds them together - i mean sure id do it after a while but not on day dot. tbh - id just let the smell wear off. A few trips out in them and they will smell normal :) I guess setting them outside to air over night might help a bit though

Personally, I think it's really nice to have that "new" trainer smell - I wouldn't be trying to get rid of it!

Bicarb of Soda absorbs odours so try generously sprinkling a load in the shoe and leave it for a few days. I'd be wary of getting the trainers wet - my last Nike pair got sodden on holiday last year (what a suprise given all the rain we had!) and I think the water reacts to the glue so consequently they stank of cat pee! It was highly unpleasant and embarrassing too!

I've heard that sticking them in the freezer overnight works as it kills the bugs that are causing the stink! Think this might have come from Good Housekeeping but can't remember for sure. Might need to warm them up though before you put them back on!!

I was going to suggest this too. Maybe put the bicarb inside a cloth bag or some kind of container so that it can do its job but not mess up your nice new shoes?

Hubby used to be a marathon runner and speant a fortune on very expensive trainers/running shoes which always went in the washing machine.
He did have a problem with a couple of pairs of Nikes and New Balance which developed the cat pee smell, took them back to the shop, who contacted the manufactures. They reported there was a problem with the glue manufacture and the shoes were replaced

Does anyone know how to get rid of that horrible new plimsol smell?

Last year I put the plimsolls in separate bags within the PE bags for the kids, but they never stayed in them and the smell always transfers to the clothes

Am considering putting them through the washing machine, but not sure they will stand up to that!

    Hi Rainey

there are some good ideas in this thread about getting the smell out of shoes.

    I'll merge this later

I would bet a little pouch of bicarb will do the trick :) Let us know what works

I have tried the bicarb will let you know in the morning.

The thread you have linked to leads to New Leather shoes and there is only one reply.

With the plimsols the problem is the rubber I think, fingers x its works though!
