Local Gov Pension Scheme

Hi we want to pay extra contributions through my wifes pension scheme which is the West Yorkshire Pension Fund and have been told two ways of doing this. One is the Additional Regular Contributions ( ARCs ) in which you can buy extra annual pension in blocks of £250 for a set amount each month, secondly is the Additional Voluntary Contribution ( AVC ) which is you can pay extra contributions into the WYPF AVC Plan, administered by Scottish Widows. I have most of the information about both of the schemes but i was wondering if there is anybody out there who has been involved in something similar and could advise me to which is the best scheme to go for

This would be like comparing salt with sugar, as they are completely different types of investment.
An AVC is dependent on how your contributions are invested and subject to changes in stock markets etc. You decide how much to invest, but you don't know for sure how much your fund value wil be at retirement.
With Additional Regular Contributions you pay a set amount each month over a set period to buy £250 of additional pension (or multiples of). So the amount you end up with is known at the outset.
