They did. It's been on their website on the login screens regularly since last October.

You will need a new Debit card as well (unless you've had a new one since last November) .

Right before my eyes and i missed it, thats me all over.

They did send me a new Debit card last week, so I should be OK then.

    Thanks.

Trashcan, in a similar manner to yourself I wanted to make a payment for the first time to a friend and found myself faced with a message saying I had to have a PinSentry device. I already have one with NatWest, so I thought, 'Why not?'

I quickly found out that the NatWest system is far superior in that you are only required to use it when you wish to set up a new third-party payment. With Barclays' PinSentry you are required to use it at each log on,even if you just want to check your balance, or transfer money between accounts. I found this to my cost when I was on holiday and unable to access my account because I had left the PinSentry device at home. Your assertion, 'I watched a demo and it looks a right pain' is absolutely correct.

Luckily, I was able to have the hapless person at the Online Banking helpline agree with me to the point where they have issued me with a new membership number which means I do not have to carry this onerous device around me with me everywhere I go. However, I will add that it took some persistence - I think what swung it for me was the fact that I informed her I wanted to log my query as a formal complaint, and my asking her for the name of the CEO of Barclays so that I could progress the complaint from a second approach.

I suppose in this day and age it is only natural to want to put as many barriers as possible between yourselves and the fraudsters. And I appreciate that an extra layer of security is preferable to logging in one day and finding that my account has been emptied. However, I feel that Barclays' approach in having to use this cumbersome device every time one logs on is erring far too much on the side of caution; and in doing so, antagonising the very people it (presumably) wishes to retain as customers.

I have had payments to be made, on hold, waiting for this pin sensor to turn up. Finally it turned up today.
I Read the instruction and off I went. It failed 3 times, but I wasn't locked out like it said I would be. After 5 goes I could not see where I was going wrong.
I Read the instructions again and watch the online video. I couldn't see what i was doing wrong, I was doing everything it said I should do. Finally on the 6th go and on the Verge off ringing Barclay's it let me in, although i did nothing different than i did the previous 5 times. Touchy thing already.

had pin sentry since christmas and find it great .I find it extra security been able to hide my pinsentry machine, try it if your not ok with it complain to barclays that you want removed from it .
Life is short, smile while you still have teeth :D
  • The other thing to point out, which I found out by chance, is that if you have a few accounts with different banks but which all need these PinSentry devices, you'll be given several of these devices and be able to use them all for all accounts (the NatWest one will work with Barclays and vice-versa) - as long as you put the relevant card + pin into the reader, you should be able to identify yourself and the the right information.

This way, I have 3 readers - one in my draw at work, one in my case and one at home. Never going to be without it, so that if ever I need to do something, I always have one of those PinSentry things with me.

The other advantage is that if ever they get lost, it's not the end of the world as I still have the other ones I can fall back on...

    Just an FYI! :)

PS I agree that sometimes, as someone posted above, these things are overly paranoid and banks are using them for everything, but it's better to be overly secure and cautious than to wake up and find that your life savings have been withdrawn by a fraudster!

I already have a PIN machine from Nationwide but have never had to use it, and very unlikely to in the future, as I don't make debit card transactions online. So when I recently opened a Barclays account and was sent the PINsentry, I was dismayed to find that I need to use it just to log-on and check my balances!

It wouldn't be so bad but this means I need to remember yet another PIN number that I would never have needed to use if it wasn't for this blasted machine
