I remember once seeing a friend on my way back from the pub. He had obviously had too much to drink and was cycling back to his house with a chair on each arm. He'd been getting stuff out of skips.

You could go looking for skips. On your bike of course. Renovated properties etc etc.

Look for broken pallets and ask if you can have them. Normal wooden pallets have a value like the blue ones. So beware if you take one of these as you'll get ticked off.

Ask at a timber yard, joiners etc but most places will use up just about everything turning it to sawdust etc.

In my experience, you only look silly once and generally to people you will never see again. You could phone ahead. So go in and ask. If you don't ask, you don't get.

Metal from steel stockist, aluminium plate is good but expensive. Its easy to shape and prototype. You can also get pop-rivets and washers for fixing it. 1-2mm sheet is easy to work.

Ask at a recycling centre where they have different skips for wood, metal etc. The people who staff mine are very friendly and helpful although this is for when putting stuff in the skips rather than taking it out so make sure you ask.
