Having been a member of both warehouses since the late 90's I have to admit to having a preference for Costco. Costco perhaps do not have the depth in range of brands that Makro offer however they appear to me to have an ethos of offering quality throughout their product ranges.
As with all retailers I feel that they have felt the pinch which can be reflected in their pricing at times. There will always be somethings cheaper elsewhere but I have alway been able to leave feeling that I have not been ripped off.
Another bonus, for me, is the fact that they carry some stock items that you would struggle to find elsewhere. In the 90's for example they introduced me to Skippy peanut butter (now in Sainsbury's) as well as Oreo cookies, also widely available now.
I would advise that you find a friend who has a card and go along for a look. I even had a couple approach me at the entrance once who asked if I could get them in to browse.0 -
I have access to Makro, Costco and Batleys and they all have their strong points on some things. Makro is definately the worst these days, but tends to keeps a wider variety of stock than the others. Costco is good for quality products like meat etc, as its about as good as you get without going to a farmer directly. Batleys is good for corner shop type supplies and cheaper products.0

Costco do sell Yorkshire tea, that is where I buy mine from! It is in huge bags though rather than boxes.0

A very simple decision for me ,Costco hands down.I have been a customer of both for years but over the last year i have not been to Makro because the quality has definately dropped and the times i have been overcharged for offer goods was happening to regular. The quality of meat and fresh foods at costco is second to none in my opinion better than M&S0

Reviving a slightly older thread. I have a Makro card already and couldn't get a Costco card because I didn't fit the jobs they give cards to (this was a few years ago, have things changed?) But right now I'm in Canada visiting and can get a Costco card here which I know I can use in the UK. It costs about $55Cdn for a year, which is about £35.
If I already have a free Makro card, is it worth buying a Costco membership? Both are equal distance from where I live, about 17 miles, so it's not like I'll be shopping there everyday.0 -
I'd go for it, can you still get your membership refunded when back in the uk if you are not happy with it?0
