Better than nothing I suppose. Look after the half pennies and the pounds etc. etc. ....

Certainly better than M&S who wanted to charge me 5p each for bags. What a rip off. I would be amazed if they cost them as much as a penny each. They said the money went to charity but what they do with their takings is their affair and does not excuse this sort of extrortionate charging. I don't mind paying for bags, after all nothing is free but I am not prepared to put up with this sort of charging.

Luckily there was a Sainsbury's next door. M&S have lost a customer.

See to me, I think charging people for carrier bags is the only serious way to deter people from not bothering to take their own. I don't think offering 1 nectar point is incentive enough to those who normally don't bother. It's not enough of a tangible benefit.

I started taking my own when I got fed up with the amount of orange bags I had falling out of my cupboards, and when I started binning them it made me feel guilty about the amount of plastic rubbish I was sticking into landfill.

you didnt need to bin them, all you had to do was take them with you when you next go shopping eg to sainsburys and put them in the plastic bag recycling box(if your sainsburys is big enough to have 1), yes i agree charging for bags is a better incentve rather than offering 1 nectar point, maybe if it doesnt work then js may decide to charge for bags

I don't always know when I am going to do shopping as I do it when my workday ends a bit early. I can't really always carry a bundle of used plastic bags around all day when visiting clients or customers. I don't mind paying, but a sensible rate.
  • I always keep a couple of bags in the glove box of the car - then they are available if/when I decide to call in to do my shopping on the way home from work.

Yes - though Sainsbury's were first when some time ago they offered 1p (real money!) for every re-used bag. They discontinued that scheme and then eventuallyTesco's took up the idea with the green point scheme.

Don't know if these are any interest to you then Economiser. Came across them through my works benefits site today and think they look pretty good - they're made from a strong parachute material and have a carabineer clip - pack into its own small pouch. Apparently "this makes a convenient and unobtrusive accessory that can be used for all those planned and unplanned moments when a bag is needed."

And if you put the word 'LIFE' into the voucher code box, you'll get 15% off the price ;)

Somerfield sell small compact foldable bags too that are on behalf of Macmillan nurses they are about £1. Morrisons sell own brand one for 39p. Fold to size of small envelope. Not sure about Morrisons one but Somerfield ones are great. Both are by the till. The only problem with Somerfield ones is they are usually sold out.
