My SIL has split up with her BF, he purchased her car on his credit card, but the log book is in her name, he now wants the car or it's value back since they split, what does she legally need to do?
I know he can prove purchase as its a credit card purchase, but is it classed as a gift?
Thanks in advance

Don't know the ins and outs of this one but thought I'd bump you up to the top.

Think the ex would have to make a civil claim against your SIL. How long ago was the car purchased? Could your SIL make arrangements to pay him? How much is the car worth?

Or what I did when my ex got finance on a car for me but I was paying it - he kept moving the payment dates about - I emptied the car of my stuff and just gave him the car back. His face was worth 1000's - "How am I going to pay for 2 cars?" Not my problem any more. Was great.

    Good luck

I think this is down to your SIL

How did she come to get the car, was it a gift or was it a loan car for as long as they were together?

Did the boyfriend ask for and expect repayment of the cost?

If she wants to keep the car she could say it was a gift and let him fight it in the courts.

Alternatively if she just wants him off her back she could just give it back.

The fact that she is the registered keeper does not mean much - it is who is the legal owner that is paramount.

Who is the car invoiced to? That person is the real legal owner.
