Last year my partner went through a phase of waning to set up his own business he despite having not a penny to his name.
It was a web design company and he advertised in a free local directory and a few lays later he was contacted by a company which claimed to send out a business directory to every business in the country all the for the cost of £260 so without thinking he said yes as apparently they let him pay in installments. This somehow seemed to end up in my name too though im not quite sure how.
3 months later they sent us a copy but not a copy to every business in the country as no business owners we know recived such a thing. Also we didn't sign anything. He wasn't happy with the service and told them so.
We actualy moved house in the meantime and today recived a letter demanding the money from a debt collector or we will end up in court? I feel he was duped and that we should not have to pay money back also I here if you didn't sign anything it is a good faith agreement and there own fault for not getting you to sign a contract.
Another thing is which I find really odd is that they are claiming to be a charity which we had no idea about could this be some sort of guilt trip thing getting us to pay thinking we will pay if we are guilted into it. I cant afford to feed the world hell I only have £30 a month to feed us both (it can be done lol) we are on such an incredibly tight budget anyway.
I even feel guilty for posting on here now they are saying this charity claim I just find the whole situation bizzare.

1. If they take you to court they will have to prove you owe them money.
2. They will also have to prove they sent the directory to every business in the country, if they didn't they didn't fulfill their part of the contract.
3. Do not talk to the debt collectors on the phone, only communicate by letter, but DO NOT sign any letter you send them.
4. Do not acknowledge that you owe anything, EVER!
5. Ask the debt collectors to provide proof you owe them money, but do not sign anything you send them.
Remember that debt collectors are nothing, they have no more powers than an Avon Lady, even when they call themselves "Civil Enforcement Officers". The only thing they have to back them up are their own words.
Post the details of the company in here, original company and debt collectors.0 -

Do a google search for "vardis" and one for "crown debt recovery", when you stop laughing you will feel much better.0 -
I could be wrong here, but maybe the other businesses didn't pay(fall) for it. Or did you mean you paid £260 to be listed in the directory? Or that you paid £260 for the company to send the directory out to every business?
