Don't know anything about the Coventry area, but try looking at the BSAC (British Sub -Aqua Club) or the SAA (Sub-Aqua Association) websites, they'll probably tell you what is in the area. For both of these he'll probably just join the club and pay a monthly or annual membership fee.

Both of these groups take someone, and train them over a long period of time with both lectures and pool sessions, so understanding what might happen and how to deal with problems become close to second nature. This IMO is a much better way of doing it than say a PADI course which can probably be done over a couple of weekends, but doesn't fit you for taking responsibility for both yourself and your dive buddy. It is a lot different learning to dive, somewhere hot with great visibility, to wanting to dive in this country which can be just as interesting, but can also be cold with poor visibility.

I appreciate that joining a club rather than buying a course makes it a trickier birthday present, but for his confidence and safety I'd strongly recommend this route.
  • you could ring cov baths i now theres a dive school who used to train there every friday night when it was closed ex oh learnt to dive with the club he learnt with there every week can't remember what the club was called

I learnt with warwickshire scuba centre, intial lessons at cov baths (try not to look at the state of the pool floor) and then did the open water element at Stoney Cove which is near leicester and the one of the best inland diving venues so being in the midlands is not a bad thing! Louisa who runs the courses also has a shop in Earlsdon. Wife and i went on out first diving holiday last summer in Eygpt, fantastic! Website links below (she is in the middle of changing so have included both):

I do hope the second website you've listed is the new website!

    Did you find one?

My wife learnt with Coventry Scuba up in Counden and they were good - but that was 5 years ago.

Have you looked at the School at Stoney Cove - I did my Rescue Diver Course there and they were good. (and a laugh).
