I wanna know about m3p players

Excuse me for being thick but can someone please give me some information about MP3 players.
I bought a cheap one from Argos last week to play radio podcasts and that works fine so I am very happy in that sense
But I also thought that I could save music on my computer from my own cd's and then transfer on to the player
However it won't let me as it said that the cd was protected ( Gwen Staffani latest album).

Is this always the case and if I want to hear music on my player do I have to pay to download from music sites .
