I saw this and it was very interesting. I really agreed with Angela's point that you should go for the better quality meat, but cut your costs by chosing cheaper cuts, and being more frugal, i.e. using a roast chicken a number of times etc ....

I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this response :p
  • I saw this and agree that you can use cheaper cuts of meat. I also agree that the value/basics sausages are RANK! My friend always buys them and I don't know how she and her family eat them. I also think that the value potatoes are sometimes nicer than the premium ones - has anyone tried those Vivaldi TTD ones in Sainsburys? They are all watery and taste horrible, yet they cost about a third more than regular and twice as much as basics. I also agree that the frozen peas are all much of a muchness.

I bought a bag of the Vivaldi pots a few weeks ago and they werent that nice. I'd read somewhere that they were good for mashing as you didnt have to add butter (I'm trying to lose a few pounds) but your right, they weren't very nice.

I think the moral of the story is buy good meat here. I have had the cheap sausages before when money has been really tight but I wouldnt buy them through choice. That said I thought they made an interesting point, if most of the sausage is bread isn't that healthier than a lot of fatty meat???

Actually they aren't healthier because the bread "binds" with the very fatty cheap meat that they use and it doesn't drip away when grilled, like in a premium sausage. The calories in a premium sausage might be more raw, but when cooked they are similar and the calories in the value sausage are not from good lean meat.

I found myself getting a little irritated watching this yesterday. Anyone with half a tastebud could have picked out the cheaper versions, personaly i'd prefer the quality versions of most things, but my cloth is well and truely cut accordingly.
