Supermarket excessive mark-ups

George, couldn't agree more. It's fantastic value and quality. I have been recomending my friends to shop there for so many years but some people just seem to like spending more money than necessary. I have given up trying to convert them. Each to their own!0

I'm glad someone mentioned Wilkos. For years we've bought their own brand kitcen paper rolls. They are always a lot cheaper than supermarkets, & the quality is the same if not better.
I cannot believe that most supermarkets have a full aisle of this paper.
Well done Wilko - keep it up & the prices down!Nice to save.0 -

Ria, ditto myself. Friends simply won't be persuaded. I don't understand it. Where is the psychological block to shopping at Lidl for some people? Taste and quality is as good or better than M&S in many cases, at about 25% of the price. Is it worth paying so much extra for the 'feel good' factor of a nicer ambience and lighting?
Over 80% of my food needs can be bought at Lidl, for huge savings. For the remaining 20%, I go to Morrisons, Tesco or Sainsbury - for 'specialist' items which Lidl doesn't stock e.g. they do lots of fine cheeses but not Gruyere.
One or two things aren't so good, as with any shop. I bet some reluctant people would buy those items and be delighted to prove their point that you only get what you pay for. Rubbish!
Another great thing is the speed of the Lidl checkout operators. They don't hang around or take a coffee break while the snail in front packs his or her bags, like in most other supermarkets. It's straight on to the next customer, finding whatever space exists for feeding through the items just scanned. Brilliant.0 -
are you comparing like for like as in the same brand?
after all it would be easy to say heinz beans 29p in sainsbury and asda own beans 8p0 -
A couple of years ago, I bought a pack of 3 bath sponges in Wilkinsons for 49p. The same sponges, in a Sainsburys wrapper, were 79p. I have seen similar price differences with items like waste sacks and cleaning cloths. The quality is certainly the same if not from the same suppliers.0

* peppermint teabags, box of 40 in Tesco: £1.60. Box of 25 in Aldi or Lidl: 49p. 100% overcharging by Tesco in this case.
that's one hell of a calculator you got there... must have been discounted... ::)0 -
Me love Wilko too! Buy all my cleaning stuff there. ;D
Tesco etc overcharging. What about large size overpricing. i.e.1 packet of something 47p; double size packet 98p. I have noticed this on loads of items, i.e. pasta, eggs, sugar, soap. This has been going on for years but I have only ever seen one article in a newspaper about. Thank god for mental maths - or the price per g on the stickers.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

..Errr
Did you not ever wonder how the likes of Tesco,Sainsbury etc ever afforded to build their massive Cathedral's to Consumerism?...I think you have found the answer....The Early bird may catch the worm ...but its the second mouse that gets all the cheese!0 -
Another thing to consider in this whole price racket is the artificial inflation of prices prior to a 'special offer' starting.
Tesco are shocking for this. Just before Euro2004, they upped the price of Carling Export to £24.99 for 24 330ml bottles. The price remained at this level for 28 days, then hey presto, half price offer, £12.49.
Not a bad price (Netto usually better), but hardly the discount they are shouting about as only the criminally insane and/or desperate would pay that kind of money for the item in the first place.
Always check the aisle ends for these 'amazing offers' and ask yourself
a) have you ever heard of the product and
b) would you have paid the full price for it anyway.0
