How to trace the legal owner of a debt?

Hmm. If a debt eforcement company buys an old debt from a loan company thats dissolved, what process does it go through? Surely just being in possession of a copy of a credit agreement is not sufficient to claim legal ownership?
I want to chase the paper trail right back to the beginning to find out who sold a debt to who but the waters are very muddy. What documents can I ask for to 'prove' that this company own the debt?
