‘Saawariya’ sees Hollywood and Bollywood joining forces to produce an enchanting mix of romance, singing, comedy and melodrama.
Based on a short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky, ‘Saawariya’ is directed by the acclaimed film maker Snajay Leela Bhansali (BAFTA nominated in 2003 for ‘Devdas’) and boasts a cast of Indian Cinema’s most popular stars, including Salman Kahn, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor.
The achingly beautiful Rani Mukherjee narrates and appears as Gulab, a streetcorner princess haunting the red light district in an expressionistic melange of Venice, Vegas, and Amsterdam. The irrepressibly callow musician Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) catches her eye, but Raj thinks he's in love with Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) who prefers to pine away for her absent lover, Imaan (Salman Kahn). All this longing (based on Dostoyevsky's WhiteNights) is stunningly captured through bizarre and elaborate backdrops, winding staircases, torrents of rain, and a color scheme heavy on the blues. Fans of Baz Luhrman's ‘Moulin Rouge’ will want to live inside this film.
Combining tender romance and enchanting musical scenes, ‘Saawariya’ centres around a chance encounter between two people and their obsession with each other over four successive nights. A must-see for fans of Bollywood, World Cinema and a superb introduction to newcomers to the genre and an absolute must for anyone who’s ever been in love.
