How long to keep records (bills, account details etc)

Not sure this is the right section to post in, so feel free to point me somewhere else.
I need to clear out my study and put it back to a bedroom.
Now I have kept pretty much every receipt, utility bill, bank/credit card statement, pay slip, tax form and pension form since the year 2000.
I even have paperwork for cars and houses I no longer own.
I could do with shredding as much of this as I can.
I have only kept them in case I need them for something. I have no idea what the something is though!!!!!
Basically I want to know how long I need to keep all these details for?
I am not self employed and never have been if that makes any difference.
Thanks, Mark

For payslips take a look at this:

For bank statements - I'd keep just last months - if you're required to show more you can easily pop into a branch and ask them to print off the duration you require.
For other household bills - again just keep last months - I don't see why you should keep more.
Cars and houses you no longer own? I'd probably say laminate then frame them :rotfl:0
